A RETROSPECTIVE: THE TURKISH AIR FORCE AND THE FIRST AEROBATIC FLIGHTS

Founded in 1911, the TURKISH AIR FORCE enters a period of many great wars to come. This period begins with the Balkan Wars, continues with World War I, followed by the War of Independence.

Being in a mission during World War I in regions covering from Gallipoli to Yemen and from there to the Caucassus, the Turkish Air Force successfully accomplishes important tasks during the War of Independence under the command of M.Kemal Atatürk…

Besides accomplishing its duties, the Turkish Air Force is eager to develop and catch up with world standart. Thus afew years after its foundation an aerobatic team is founded in 1914…

On March 5, 1914, Pilot Lieutenant Fazıl Bey performs the vertical spin in an altitude of 400 m. Other pilots then started performing various Aerobatics manuevres.

During the Republican period the Turkish Air Force will be reestablished and will accomplish many more succesful missions…

On July 1, 1932 the Air Force personnel becomes an independent combat branch and from 1933 onwards the Turkish Air Force pilots start wearing their blue uniforms, blue being their symbolic colour.

While after 1922 the developments are advancing at a fast pace, in 1940 the number of planes rise to 500 in 1944 the turkish Air Force will be established…

 

 

 

THE FIRST GROUP AEROBATIC WORKS OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

The Turkish Air Force becomes very soon a successful force in flight aerobatics throughout the world, and the first official aerobatics executions start in 1926  within the Air Force School. This group formed by many successful pilots as well as by Lieutenant Pilot Enver Akoğlu.

 

AN IMPORTANT CHANGE IN THE HISTORY OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE: FROM PROPELLOR PLANES TO JET PLANES

After Turkey becomes a NATO member, it's modernization period accelerates even more and soon after 1952 the propellor planes are superseded by jet planes. In the 1950s the jets are fully equipped. The newly established 191st, 192nd and 193rd squadrons are the first aerobatic teams, who are the pride of our nation and the guarantee of Turkey's future success are formed in those years…

 

THE FIRST ACROTEAM OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

In the Turkish Air Force the first acroteam, corresponding exactly to technological modern world standarts, call sign MİLLİ, is formed soon after the introduction of the jets in 1952. The first acroteam of 9th Air Base Command (Balıkesir) which is the first jet base of the Turkish Air Force, flies an F-84 G (Thunderjet). The team with the call sign MİLLİ (NATIONAL)  which continued its activities between1952-1962 has accomplished may important tasks. MİLLİ has performed successful flights in Turkey as well as in other countries such as Italy and Belgium… 

 

 

THE SECOND ACROTEAM OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

The name of the second acroteam established in the 4th Air Base Command (Eskişehir) in 1955 has the call sign UÇAN KUĞULAR (FLYING SWANS). This acroteam, which flies F-86 E (Sabre) jets, painted in red and white with a swan drawing at its head, has continued its activities for 10 years. In 1964 the UÇAN KUĞULAR have won the admiration of Turkey ant the world during their nine-ship and twelve-ship demonstrations.

 
 

THE THIRD ACROTEAM OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

The acroteam with the call sign AKREP (Scorpion), of the 8th Air Base Command (Diyarbakır) formed towards the end  of 1957, has continued its activities until 1959. Fliying F-84 G type aircraft, the acroteam has participated in many flight performances in Turkey and Pakistan.


THE FOURTH ACROTEAM OF TURKISH AIR FORCE

This acroteam with the call sign YARASALAR (BATS) was established in 1964 in the 5th Main Jet Base Command (Merzifon). THE FIFTH ACROTEAM OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

This acroteam is established in 1966 first with the call sign KARTAL (Eagle) and then is renamed in May 21, 1971 with the call sign COŞKUN*. The acroteam of the 6th Main Jet Base Command (Bandırma) flies F-5 A (Freedom Fighter) aircraft…The acroteam COŞKUN has performed in Turkey and in 1971 in Italy…

 

*on May 21, 1971, Pilot Lieutenant Coşkun Turan died during a flight.

 

THE SIXTH ACROTEAM OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

This acroteam has been established in the 5th Main Jet Base Command (Merzifon) in 1971 in order to perform for the 900th celebrations of the Malazgirt Victory in 1071. The acroteam which is formed only for this occasion flies F-5A (Freedom Fighter) aircraft…

 

THE SEVENTH ACROTEAM OF THE TURKISH AIR FORCE

THE TURKISH STARS ARE BORN

During 1971-1992 there were not any new acroteams that have performed regularly. After a period of 20 years the TURKISH AIR FORCE decides to re-establish its Aerobatics activities…

 

Under the command of Commander of Air Force Halis Burhan, worked for the creation of a new acroteam started in 1992 and official decision for the creation of the acroteam started on September 11,1992 which is to be within the 132nd Weapons Tactics and Standardization Squadron Command of the 3rd Main Jet Base Command (KONYA).

 

During the establishment and inspection works, the decision to form an acroteam with NF-5 type aircraft within 132nd Squadron is put into legislation on November 7, 1992. The four main pilots of this acroteam are chosen… 

The aerobatic flight plan and the detailed flight plans have been prepared and presented to Commander of Air Force Halis Burhan and the first exercises are being started. On January 1993 all training within the nation and abroad has been successfully completed.

 

FROM 1993 TO 2000

In 1993 the dual wing training has been started and soon after the successful result is obtained after five sorties. Later on the right and left wing pilot training has been started and soon is followed four-ship-wing training.

 

In the time being members of this acroteam are sent for further research and training to Canada, the U.K. and Italy…

 

In order to reinforce the working safety and activities of the acroteam the smoke system and re-painted of the planes are re-introduced,as well as precautions are further taken for flight safety of the NF-5 type aircraft on April 27, 1993…

 

While research continues, the TURKISH STARS acroteam performs for the authorities and other guests during the last day of the Fire-Range Contest of the Turkish Air Force on June 19,1993 in the 4th Main Jet Base Command (Akıncı/Ankara). After this performance of the TURKISH STARS takes the squadron status and is considered to be the youngest supersonic aerobatics teams of the world…

 

In August 1993 several modifications and painting works started over the aircraft at 1 Air Supply and Maintenance Center (Eskişehir)

During this period the training for wing flights and six-ship-wing flights have been started and the modifications and maintenance accelerated.

Nine NF-5A and one NF-5B aircraft which were in maintenance are given back to the TURKISH STARS in perfect condition in July 1994…

 

In October 5, 1994 the 8th Main Jet Base Command (Diyarbakır) is introduced to the public during the performances of the F-16 Activation Celebrations and the celebration of the Day of the Republic in October 29,1944 in Ankara…

 

Additionally the TURKISH STARS have been observed by many national and international guests during their "Distant Thunder-95" exercises in Eskişehir in April 20, 1995…

 

In Baku/Azerbaycan in August 24,2001  Turkish Stars demonstrated a display to over than one million people,that is to be a world record.

 

The first show by an 8 aircraft formation is demonstrated on March 30,2004.

 

The 200th show of TURKISH STARS  flown in Rize on July 03,2004.

 

134th Acroteam Squadron Command is demonstrating with 11 pilots now…
